Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 large cabbage leaves (green cabbage)
  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 cup uncooked long-grain rice
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tomato sauce (with herbs)
  • 2 cups crushed tomatoes (canned or fresh)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley or dill (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cabbage leaves: Boil water in a large pot. Remove the core from the cabbage and peel off 12 leaves. Blanch them for 2-3 minutes until soft.
  2. Sauté filling ingredients: In a skillet, heat oil and sauté onions until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook briefly.
  3. Mix filling: In a bowl, combine ground meat, cooked rice (cooled), sautéed onions and garlic, herbs, salt, and pepper.
  4. Assemble rolls: Place about 2-3 tablespoons of filling at the base of each leaf. Roll tightly and tuck in the sides.
  5. Prepare sauce: Combine crushed tomatoes with sugar and lemon juice in a saucepan; simmer for 10 minutes.
  6. Bake: Spread half the sauce in a baking dish, layer the rolls seam-side down, cover with remaining sauce, then bake at 350°F for about 45 minutes.
